Dear Affiliates,
In October, we held our annual SIG 1 Web chat on the topic of grammar assessment and intervention. Our three expert panelists, Sean Redmond, Ph.D., C. Melanie Schuele, Ph.D., and Kerry-Proctor Williams, Ph.D., answered questions submitted by participants. If you missed this lively question-answer session, you can access the Web chat transcript on the ASHA website.
I am hopeful that this issue of Perspectives reaches your email prior to the ASHA convention in Denver. For those of you who are attending convention this year, SIG 1 has invited two expert speakers to provide sessions about interventions for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Amy Donaldson, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, Portland State University, will present a three-hour short course entitled “SocialsibS: A Family-Based Approach to Social Communication Intervention for Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder.” Dr. Donaldson will review evidence from her intervention program which uses video modeling, sibling mediation, and parent coaching to support social communication skills in young children. The course is scheduled for Thursday, November 12, from 1:30-4:30 p.m. in the Embassy Suites, room Crystal B. Tickets are required for this course and ASHA members who are SIG affiliates may purchase discounted tickets to SIG-developed Short Courses for $40 each. Our second expert, Jason Travers, Ph.D., University of Kansas, will present a two-hour seminar, “Get the Message! The Communicative Nature of Inappropriate Behavior in Learners with ASD.” His presentation will include suggestions for designing simple interventions to support socially appropriate communication in school-age children with ASD. This session, co-sponsored by the 2015 ASD convention committee, is free. The session is scheduled for Saturday, November 14, from 8:00-10:00 a.m. in the Colorado Convention Center, room 403-404. Finally, we would love to see you at our annual SIG 1 convention affiliates meeting! Your coordinating committee is planning to present a brief summary of emerging trends in child language assessment and intervention. As I write this, final scheduling of this meeting is not yet complete; details about the time and room will be posted on the SIG 1 community.
