Division 1, Language Learning and Education presents
Beyond Phonemic Awareness:
Necessary Understandings for Reading Words
Register early; space is limited!
Phonemic awareness is necessary for reading words, but it is not sufficient. In this Clinical Skills Workshop, we will explore the rest of the story, including instructional methods and milestones for teaching students to use word analysis and oral language to read the words they encounter from primary through the intermediate grades. We will explore each of the major stumbling blocks to reading words, methods to assess where students fall along the continuum toward fluent reading, and strategies to help students vault the hurdles in their path.
