Previous evidence-based practice (EBP) tutorials have focused on the use of EBP for clinical decisions about treatment. This and several following tutorials focus on the task of applying EBP to assessment. Because of the limited amount of secondary literature related to assessment of children’s language, these earlier assessment tutorials will be concerned with critiquing primary research. Later tutorials will provide procedures for using secondary research.
Clinicians generally decide for themselves if the assessment methods they intend to use are reliable and valid. The purpose of this and the following tutorials is to present strategies for such determinations from an EBP perspective. Recommendations will be presented about identifying pertinent sources of information, making decisions about the consistency (reliability) and accuracy or lack of bias (validity) of the sources, determining clinical utility, and applying the information to clinical practice.
