Sackett, Strauss, Richardson, Rosenberg, and Haynes (2000)  have explained that evidence-based practice (EBP) involves using the best available evidence, clinical expertise and insight, as well as values to inform clinical decision making. Earlier, Sackett and associates had eloquently explained the importance of integrating evidence and clinical expertise.
The addition of client values to evidence and expertise has resulted in a well integrated view of EBP.
The practice of EBP involves specific steps or procedures that allow speech-language pathologists to use evidence, expertise, and client values in clinical decision making. Some EBP steps already may be in the repertoire of many speech-language pathologists; however, other EBP steps may be new to some of us. As Gallagher (this issue) indicated, EBP is not merely the intention to apply research to clinical practice. EBP involves the implementation of specific procedures to allow clinicians to determine the applicability of specific information to a specific client.
