For the first time, Division 1 will be offering two pre-Convention Clinical Skills Workshops focused on retooling clinicians’ skills. Dr. Patricia A. Prelock of the University of Vermont will offer a workshop entitled “Creating Comic Strip Conversations and Social Stories to Support Social Skills in Children with Autism.” In this workshop, participants will learn the basic framework for developing and using comic strip conversations and social stories. Then, participants will create social stories and comic strip conversations as teams in response to examples of difficult social communication situations for children with autism.
The second workshop, provided by Dr. Barbara J. Ehren of the University of Kansas and T om C. Ehren from Broward County Schools, FL, is entitled “Beyond Paperwork: Educationally Relevant IEPs. ” The purpose of this workshop is to provide participants with practical suggestions for identifying the impact of a communication disorder on a student’s learning and developing goals and objectives related to curriculum standards. Participants will be engaged in activities focused on learning how to meet the needs of their particular work setting.
