You may remember the Starfish Mini-Grant program that Division 1 sponsored a few years ago. If you do, the good news is that we are reinstituting this program. If this doesn’t ring a bell, then a little background information will set the stage. The name of this program is a metaphor for “making a difference. ” Perhaps you have heard the story of the man seen running along the beach, tossing beached starfish back into the ocean. When the observer questioned why he was doing this the man said, “The tide is going out. If I don’t throw the starfish into the sea, they will die.” The observer replied, “But the beach goes on for miles. There are many starfish. What you are doing can’t make a difference to all these starfish. As the man picked up and threw another starfish into the ocean he said, “It will make a difference to this one.”
