In 1985, the U.S. Department of Education and The Association for Persons with Severe Disabilities cosponsored a national symposium on issues surrounding communication services for students with severe disabilities. Participants in that symposium generated a series of consensus statements regarding issues and needs identified during the course of the meeting (OSEP &TADS, 1985).One of these consensus statements was a recommendation for the establishment of a multi-disciplinary committee to address the many needs and issues identified during the symposium. In proposing the establishment of this joint committee, the symposium participants were acknowledging the essential roles played by professionals from many different disciplines in the delivery of appropriate communication supports and services for persons with severe disabilities.
