As part of the discussion related to education, practice, and policy issues in language and literacy, several associations had the opportunity to share with the West Coast Summit participants their mission and vision for the future. What follows is a summary of the key elements of their presentations.
Barb Daniel, representing the American Academy of Private Practice (AAPP), described her association as made up of a small constituency with a primary focus on providing services to individuals in a variety of settings (schools, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, private offices, patients’ homes, etc.). She described the AAPP as representing the “real problems and real solutions” being “on the firing line day to day.” Daniels mentioned that professionals in private practice often see those children who really need services, but don’t meet the school guidelines that qualify a child for those services. Many private practitioners, she reported, provide services at minimal to no fees and are frequently involved in advocacy for both adults and children.
